Resonator info

I have a IC that requires a 4Mhz resonator. I noticed that the schematic showed it hooked up the same way as a crystal (two outer pins). I just got the resonator today, and noticed it has three pins. Can someone tell me what the middle pin is for? First time ive used these, and just want that little detail clear in my head..

Alohas,
Robert

    Robert,
The middle pin should be connected to ground.

    Uhh...
Doesn't the middle pin ALSO mean that no additional capacitors are required [unlike the two pin version]?

    Kramer,

·· Not necessarily.· You need to read the datasheet for a given resonator to know which size (if any) caps are installed inside.· Crystals obviously requite them separately, however these are also usually the most accurate clock source.
