In the following schematic can I connect the two data lines and connect them to the same pin?

    Yes, I was able to successfully communicate with the MAX 186 by connecting the data out and data in pins together via a 1k resistor. Then, I connected the data in pin to one of the Stamp's IO pins.

    Here is the schematic of how I connected the MAX186 to my BS2.
