Places to get headers and breadboards?

I rather dislike making things permanent, so I always like to use connectors and such in case something needs replacing. Where is a good place to get snappable single-row headers in both male and female variations? I can find male headers in some places, but the female versions are never snappable. I know they exist, but not in any place I've looked.

Also, I like breadboards. I love breadboards. I think breadboards would be a good replacement for drywall. So, where can I obtain decent-quality breadboards, aside from Radio Shack? And where can I obtain the tiny breadboards that are on the SX Tech Board (and apparently the BS2 Board of Education)?

Parallax sells the little breadboards of which you post (look over in parts, accessories.)
Snappable SIP connectors [F]?· I've seen some that looked like they should snap, but didn't, it was just an aesthetic.· Think Dremel (esp. cutting wheel.)

hmmmm. replacement for drywall.... I LIKE IT! wonder what swmbo would think if I used breadboards instead of ceramic tile when I re-do the bathroom

Well, my SWHMBO would move my sleeping arrangments into the Cat box... of which there are 4 cats currently using it, therefor, a highly unplesent thought...
However, the subject being breadboards, Digikey has a real nice (and big one) for $8 and change (USD)

I'd bought a small, pre-mounted breadboard from Mouser (about $18 shipped) but soon decided that I needed more space. Rather than buy a larger model I bought four, discrete breadboards (830 tie-points and four busses) from the local Fry's (about $29 with tax) and a stainless steel plate and plastic feet (about $13 with tax) from Lowes and made my own large mounted breadboard (see photo).

The Elenco-brand breadboards I bought came with double-sided tape covering the entire bottom-side so they are really stuck on the plate. The pre-mounted breadboard is also stuck to the plate but with not quite so much tape so it will be relatively easy to remove if I decide to add three more Elenco breadboard modules. For $60 I have a fairly nice-looking, spacious breadboard with a very strong base.

The Elenco breadboards are available from Outpost.com (which Fry's owns) and cost $5.99 each.

I did some research on the small breadboards Parallax puts on the BOE's and they are similar, if not the same as a 3M model I found on Mouser for something like $7 each (!) which makes the the Parallax item something of a deal...I bought five of them to get the price break (about $23 less shipping) so I can prototype a bunch of things and leave them on the small, almost disposable breadboard until I can get around to re-implementing the circuit on a PCB.

As for those connectors, I bought some female, board mount connectors from Mouser (P/N's 517-974-01-02 [2 pin], -04 [4 pin], etc.) that are almost exactly like the ones used on BOE (the connectors that the breadboard is snugged right up against to provide access to poer and and the Stamp's I/O). These are probably the same as the ones PJ refers to since they do look like they are "snappable" but it seems aesthetic. You might get away with cutting them with an Xacto knife or, possibly, holding the connector in a large pair of flat pliers with the "snap-edge" aligned with the end of the pliers and then breaking it off. Dunno if it'd work...have to try it.

I think those RSR breadboards (p101 of their current catalog) are from the same manufacturer as the Elenco breadboards I mentioned...they are definitely cheaper!

They also carry the 3M breadboards including the model 923273 which is the same one Parallax uses on the BOE, et al. Single item price: $8.63. Ouch. freaked.gif

Ooh, nice. That last site also sells what appear to be Radio Shack's Archer models, my personal favorite. I have a big ProAM board, but it likes to bend things. Great way to waste IC sockets.

On a related note, what's the best way to hook a surface-mount chip to a breadboard? Should I just solder it onto a little PCB and attach a header?
