hi all,
anyone know where i can order single quanitys of a a/d converter chip ?
i know parallax has the maxim 1270 for about $30 , however i dont need 8 channels...
the maxim 1272 has one channel, 12 bits , low volts and spi, and most important allows me to measure a 0-10vdc input.... sells for 6.75, if i want to buy 1k rolleyes.gif
so... whos your fav non parallax chip retailers ?... this a/d will be used by a proppellor, so the 3 v ones are preffered.

The best supplier will be the one who has the part you need in stock in single quantities. Where are you located? I normally use Mouser since they are close and I get 2 day sevice by UPS ground. Bear in mind that most of the bigger distributers are going to use UPS or FedEx, so minimum shipping will be $7 or $8 even for just one small part. Digi-Key (handling fee for orders under $25) and Newark are two other large distributors.

    hi Sawmiller;

You can make a virual A/D out of an SX, two resistors, one capacitor, and 8 or so lines of code. Beside the SX, which you may already be using, about 5 cents!

    Cheers,

One thing I've looked for is an A/D with at least one 18 bit+ channel, preferably two, and between two and four 12bit channels. I could always filch a 2704 from work (24+ bits with a 4wire RTD) but then I'd be a filcher...

...And go figure, you just don't see those in the trash and fixable all that often.

    Yours, Tom Perkins

    · Jameco, DigiKey, Mouser...
    · What's it matter where they're located?· Everything goes by common-courier and gets delivered to big or small, regardless.

    · 0-10V input?· Well, that's what scaling resistors (voltage dividers) are all about.· Why paint yourself into a corner?

    · Post Edit -- didn't find a max1272 at mouser, digikey, jameco, or newark.

    Folks -

If you have a part number and are looking to source it, here is a very handy search engine which will search 22 different distributors and resources concurrently:

Since Findchips comes back with no matches, you might try and request a free sample :)

on the topic of using the sx-28 for a ADC, thats a nice solution , except i need 48" span and a 1/32" accuracy which comes out to 1500 or so points, so prolly a 11 bit a/d would work, and whenever i work with the sx-28 i have a hard time when i go past the byte level..8 bit, maybe once the sx/b goes to word values... its not the sx's fault, just my embarassment for having to take my shoes off to count above 8 bits
thanks for the pointer for the findchips thou..

RDL2004 has it right.. if you only need one chip, go to maxim and fill out the form.. they'll send you one as a sample, no cost to you. Obviously they are hoping that you are from some big firm and you will then buy thousands of their chips. But they'll send the sample regardless. I asked for and received 3 different chips from them. They also send them priority mail. I think I had mine in about a week total (from request date)

i recently wanted some samples from maxim... 3 or 4 different things.. i accidently submitted my sample request 3 times... something like $300 of parts arrived. i even sent them an email asking to please disregard the second 2 orders, as i am not greedy... it only took maybe 3 days...

i recomend it.. microchip is similar.

Maxim has alot of ICs that noone carries, fortunately you can buy directly from Maxim and almost all are availible in single quantities. Type the part number in here https://shop.maxim-ic.com/storefront/welcome.do on the price and availibilty page.
