some dumb transistor questions

I want more power out of my BS1, so I figure I should use some transistors, but I have a few questions that I can't find answers too (I've google searched for quite a while now)

How can I tell how many amps I can get out of the emitter?· I need about a 1amp 12volt output activated by a BS1 pin, can I do this with just a transistor or do I need a relay fed by a transistor?

thanks!

    · It'd be easiest to implement a relay driver circuit than to implement a 1A emitter-follower.· The former requires 1 transistor and 1 relay, the latter probably two transistors and some calculations.

    · The maximum current draw that you can expect from a transistor is defined by IC (MAX).· That must be tempered by PD, which is total device dissipation.
