Folks -

Haptic or tactile (touch) sensors have been at the tail end of replicated human senses in robots. That may not remain so, for too much longer, based on this BBC News science article:

    Neat...

Of course, it means that you also need an increase in processing power in a robot to fully utilise the sensor.

    Gadgetman -

I would imagine the Parallax Propeller I might be so capable, and if not the Propeller I then the Propeller II for sure. It is outside of the PBASIC Stamp's capability in native mode, but a co-procesor solution is certainly possible.

I'd imagine an SX solution might be possible as well, so this might be right up Bean's (Terry Hitt) alley, when he gets done with his present SD Logger project. Parenthetically, the SD Logger is _quite_ a sweet platform for saving large amounts of data on a PBASIC Stamp, which data can later be accessed and manipulated directly by a PC.

So, ummm,... what is it everyone would want a robot to touch, anyway?· Maybe that one·guy with the milled aluminum·'bot-head, "bi-pedal"-'bot, 'bot-fantasy has plans?

    PJ -

How about a robot that could count coins, or make CHANGE by feeling the coins and identifying them?

    · Oh sure, counting coins... and then·you know what's next:·skimming off the top, a dime here & there into his crooked little robot pockets.··"Bi-pedal" 'bots will wear pants, won't they?

    · Since I posted this in the Robotics section yesterday, I keep working the·robot sensor-fingers·and Helen Keller jokes angle; sometimes I just can't help myself, but society's to blame.

    · (Oh well, as my best-friend's Mom would always say, "PJ, you're terrible.")

hmm .. all of the futurama episodes come to mind... robots deftly picking pockets, removing wallets then their contents, then able to slip the wallet back into place.

but being able to pick up a bottle of beer without breaking it and then bi-pedally (?) delivering it to me with a "yes master, here's your ice-cold one"...
    or
"robot slave, go change the baby's diaper!" "yes master"

oh..wait... sorry...swmbo already says that to me... kinda driftin in n out lately wink.gif
