Vin is usually the supply voltage before it is conditioned but this explanation depends on where it is called out.

Thanks steven. The homework board has all three on it and in an example of a simple servo setup one lead of the servo was connected there. Is there any discussion in any PDF that will explain this better?

    Thanks

You see, "Vin" is designed to take a 9-volt battery, or a 6-volt battery pack (or 4 1.5 volt alkalines, same thing). Or, a 12-volt 'wall-wart' unregulated DC supply.

"Vin" is then fed to a "linear regulator", which drops its output voltage (Vdd) to +5 volts.

Now, if you're using battery power (that 6-volt pack above), and you're using Servo's, it's nice to be able to drive the servo supply with that 6 volts. So, Parallax put a jumper on the BOE that allows you to power the servo's from either Vdd (+5 volts) or Vin (6 volts). If you're Vin is above 6 volts, then you can't use it for the Servo's.

Makes Sense. Thanks. I put a meter on them and now understand. Thanks.
