i tried searching the forums for any topics related to this, but i couldn't find any. sorry if this question has allredy been answered.

i would like to interface my basic stamp with an extrenal memory device, such as a usb pen drive, or some kind of memory stick. and i would like to be able to read and write to it, and save the data permanatly, like nvram. i was wondering if any company made devices just for basic stamps that were easy to use, or if any one knew of some scrips and wiring diagrams to use other forms of memory. any help would be awsome.

there are commercial products to use a SD or CFcard. these come in the form of an 'application module' or demonstration board. these usually cost 100$ or more.

how much memory do you NEED? there are serial, spi, and 2-wire EEPROMS that may be big enough. If you wanted to use USB, I would imagine you will, at least, need an FTDI type USB chip. These allow a usb to serial interface. I have only seen them used to connect a device to a PC USB.. Not to connect a device to a PC USb peripheral.. there are also several USB prototyping modules on the web, ranging from $30 to $100 or more. This may work, but again, i think most or all of my casual looksee made it seem like people only(?) use these to connect devices to a PC.

i would be interested in what you find.. I think the FTDI chips are like $5, but surface mount...

    Gents -

I'm not sure how you're coming up with the $100.00 price tag, unless you're adding the price of MMC cards into it? Here are two complete MMC/SD solutions, either of which is less than $50.00 USD:

    Rogue Robotics:
    http://www.roguerobotics.com/products/electronics/ummc
The listed price is - $49.95 CAD or $45.39 USD

    GHI Electronics:
    http://www.ghielectronics.com/uALFAT-SD.htm
The listed price is $39.95 USD

As far as USB is concerned, here is a USB chip setup for $29.95:

I also am looking at the MMC card reader writer from Rogue Robotics for my rocket data logging device. Let me know how it works for you.

Yeahh Nice products , thank you for the link.

However , in my country I can only find boards with the socket for the SD/MMC card and the pins to connect. US$ 12

Does anybody knows how to interface without that US$ 30 chip ???

Hope some input from you guys. I already tried the Serial EEprom , it works fine. Know I need more Mbs ......

    Greetings

Take a look at the AT45DB041 chip.· Very easy to use and has 2048 pages of 264 bytes each.· That is a lot of storage.
