········ Hello my name is Jeffrey, my dad and I purchased the Boebot USB version. One of the questions I want to ask is that why do the instructions always say that we need a USB to serial ·adapter when the USB cable fits perfectly·between the USB port on the computer·and the Board of· Education.·· Also our computer does not recognize the Board of Education, is this because we do not have an adapter?burger.gif

The USB BOE has a built on USB-> Serial adapter. Did you install the drivers for it off the CD when you first plugged the board in and powered it on ? In windowsXP it should come up and tell new hardware found, the new hardware found is actually the built in USB -> Serial converter, since the Stamp is serial only it won't be autodeteced or need drivers in windows.

I have the USB BOE and the instruction manual that came with it went step by step on how to install the USB drivers

The USB BOE-bot is reasonably new. Before that, you did have to have a separate adapter to connect to the Serial BOE-Bot. With the USB BOE-Bot, the USB to serial adapter is built into the board. But that's why the documentation keeps mentioning the separate adapter.

Now, the FTDI adapter chip that makes up your USB adapter DOES need to have the right drivers installed.

You can verify your driver by going to your device manager, and looking in your ports listing- if correctly installed, you will see a listing under "ports" with a (COM) number listed after the entry.
