Board of Education vs. Homework board

What are the differences?

From pictures, I've seen that the BoE board has some built-in connectors for servos. Is that it?

Specifically, I'm wondering if I can use the homework board with the "Robotics with the Boe-Bot Parts Kit" (http://www.parallax.com/detail.asp?product_id=28124).

Thanks

There are other differences between the boards, but to answer your main question, yes you can use the HW board with the Boe-Bot kit.

The Boe-Bot manual is written for both boards, and explains the difference between the two. You can download the PDF and look at it for more details.

There a 1 or 2 more kits that have the manual modified for the HW board. Other kits should be able to use the HW board, but you will have to know enough of what you're doing to bulid the circuits without reference, accounting for the board specs.

If you don't have a HW board or BoE board yet, and are trying to decide, the Summer Special is an excellent value.

    Thanks.

I'm working through the "What is a Microcontroller" book now.

I'm looking towards my next project and didn't want to buy the BoE if the Homework board sufficed (though looking at the differences, I may get the BoE anyway.)

You won't be able to plug a AA battery pack into the homework board without the addition of a barrel plug connector that goes to a 9V connector. The servo headers can be built up on the bread board, but considering that you will have two IR emitters, two detectors, two LEDs, one speaker you will find the breadboard quite crowded if you are also adding the servo connectors there. The other reason for the headers on the BOE is the ability to jumper select Vdd vs. Vin for powering the servos.

Also, keep in mind as you "experiment" that the I/O pins of the homework board already have a built-in 220 ohm current-limiting resistor...so adjust your voltage/current calculations accordingly. This is covered in the WAM text, but it is easy to forget as you go through the other Parallax docs (don't ask me how I know :^))
