Using the Ping sensor with the BS1

Hi,
I'm using the Ping ultrasonic sensor with the BASIC Stamp 1 microcontroller. The microcontroller runs the demo progam (Ping_Demo.BS1). Most of the time the measured distance is correct, but sometimes a wrong one is returned (e.g. 180 cm while the actual distance to the object is 7 cm). I've already tested the Ping with the BS2 and then everything works fine. Any idea what causes this?
