"Chip connection Failed"

I receive this error now whenever I try to download anything to my SX28. What does this mean?
·
Also, how do I connect a resonator to the SX without the SX Tech board?
·
Thanks,
Marcus

    Hi Mag748;

The most common reason for that type of message is a bad connector on your SX-Key.

It happens to me frequently, and I just jiggle the thing side to side, then usually all is well again.

On occasion the IDE program locks up, then I need to close and re-open it, and all is well.

    Cheers,

I have 2 SX28 chips and it only happens with one of them. I think its a problem with the chip. I was wondering if any techies knew what was wrong with the chip itself. Maybe a bad eeprom? dont know.
    Thanks pjv.

If it's a bad chip, it's a bad chip. It really doesn't make sense to troubleshoot a $4 chip. Just chuck it.

Ok. Now where can I find an answer to the second question?

    Thanks,
    Marcus

    Solder works well

If you want a better answer, then you'll need to refine your question.

Sorry. Here is a better explanation.

I have a 3 pin 20 MHz resonator (it’s a little tan blobby thing with three pins coming out of the bottom). I put it in the socket on the SX Tech board and it works fine. Now I want to transfer this to a perf board. Right now I have the leftmost pin connected to pin 26 on the SX and the right most pin connected to pin 27 on the SX. And the middle pin of the resonator is connected to ground. Is this correct? And also, does the MCLR pin have to be connected to anything with this set up?

    Thank you,
    Marcus.

Sounds like you have the resonator connected correctly.

You MAY (or may not) need a resistor across the outermost pins of the resonator. It usually works without a resistor, but it is recommended.

The MCLR pin must be connected to Vcc with a 10K resistor.

You should also use one of the brown-out-reset settings on the device line of your program. BOR42 if you are using 5volts.

One more thing, I noticed large capacitors on the BOE next to the power input. Are these for filtering purposes? and should I have any on my perf board?
    Thank you,
    Marcus

Those capacitors are required if you're using a voltage regulator such as the 7805 or 2940-5. Check the voltage regulator data sheet for recommended capacitor types and values.

    I had this problem recently.

Don't throw anything out without trying a fresh battery if you're using a battery powered device.

I almost ruined my SX-key trying to figure out what was wrong.

Also, turn down (off) the fifo buffers on the comport uart.
