General Electronics Question: Mic's Amplifiers and Ipod

Ok. I first want to say that I know pretty much nothing about electronics as a whole. I can scrape by by just learning what seems to be importatnt but I have not had a formal learning in the fine field of electronics. My question I hope is simple. Here's my setup:

I have a box that allows the input from a microphone and an input from an IPOD which are both wired to the same 2 lines(Ground and mono audio data). When I connect the 2 lines to the amplifier I can not get a sound out of the MIC even if the IPOD is stopped(On but not playinganything) But if i disconnect the ipod the amplifier plays the sound fom the MIC. Any suggestions on how to let themic and the IPOD output at the same time? I was thinking about using a diode but don't really know

    Are you trying to "mix" the two signals? or have a switch in that you could switch between the two different inputs?

    What kind of mic is it?

    Odds are the impedance of your amplifier and your IPOD are such that the mic signal prefers to go through the IPOD rather than the amp (which leads to no mic sound until you disconnect the IPOD).

    I'm trying to mix the two signals. The mic is a COXWAIN's mic for a COX-BOX(tm) Rowing Amplifier. How would I go about fixing the "impedance" problem?

    Quick Question. Could I Just do someething like:

    AMPLIFIER
    /\
    ||
    ||
    ||
    //\\
    // \\
    // \\
    ^ ^
    || ||
    {MIC} {IPOD}

    ^ = Diode that only flows in the "up" direction. Would that work. Note. this is only for the DATA line. the ground would just be wired directly

    Ok.. These forums strip mult spaces. Here's another

    MIC -> -\
    ===AMPLIFIER
    IPOD -> -/

    The -> Would be diodes flowing in the "right" direction

    So you'd have a diode on each of the input lines flowing towards the amp?

    Is the mic powered? Do you know it's output level (voltage)?
    A silicon diode will drop 0.7Volts of your signal....you could get a germanium diode, but that drops 0.3V.

    I didn't google for your COXWAIN's mic, but is it a condensor mic? A condensor mic needs a power souce and amplifier. If you are dropping a bunch of signal (clipping too) on a diode, you may find you don't have enough output.

    Anyhow, you might want to look at a couple of op-amps. One to boost your mic signal, and the other can act as a mixer between the IPOD and mic. Again, I don't know the levels the IPOD puts out....it may also need an op-amp as well!

    Think about your circuit again with the info that audio signals are typically "AC-like". But I can see how you would come up with that idea by thinking in a DC world...

    Keep pluggin'...
