chip pin problem

hi guys, this might not be related to BASIC Stamp, but since I am using it to make one (MAX232), here the thing i cannot figure out:

As I know, if a chip contains a hole on the side, it means that there is a pin # 1, but thats only in DIPs, i have SS

I've attached a picture, pins labeled with letters. Please respond, if you know, what letter is a correct pin. Something like, "A = 1, B = 2, etc"

Thanks

This is one of those "Google is your friend..." postings.· To prove it, I went to Google and entered this text into the search field

    max232 +ti

The first document presented is this one: http://focus.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/max232.pdf and you'll find the answer on page 11; I can't tell you because you provided an low-res image and the marking on that chip is quite subtle -- though I believe it may be pin P.

Look at the chip from the end; the pin 1 side is angled.

Jon is talking about the package and not the pins themselves, the side pin 1 is on has a more pronounced sloping on the plastic packaging. If you arrange the package so that the sloped side is facing left, pin 1 is in the upper left. It is hard to tell from the photo, but it appears the pin you labeled P is pin 1.
