Will the Ping))) bother my dogs?

I know that dogs can hear higher frequencies than humans, but I'm not sure how high. With the 40kHz tone from the Ping))) hurt my dogs' ears?

The answer is yes your dog will likely be able to hear it, but it is at thier upper limit. The same way many humans dont hear frequencies near 20kHz unless they are really loud, its the same with dogs and 40kHz. Also the higher the frequency the more directional the sound is, so unless you dog is directly in front of it I seriously doubt it will bother him, but if it does, he'll just move out of ear shot.

    Hi Steve...

I have a Ping))) attached to my BoeBot, and both of my Alsatians (German Shepherds that are actually from Germany) with their legendary ears will follow it around, but it doesn't seem to bother them. They will come from another room to investigate, but I haven't seen any signs that they don't like it.

Thanks, Jamie & Paul. I was a little worried because my dogs have Invisible Fence collars so they are sensitive to certain frequencies. Now that I know they'll be able to hear it, I'm hoping that the 40kHz will be different enough from the frequency the collars put out so that it won't freak them out. I don't know exactly what frequency the collars make, but I figure it must be below about 14kHz because I can hear it (many years in rock bands).

... Alsatians (German Shepherds that are actually from Germany) ...
I know I'm being completely OT, but GSDs name was changed to Alsatian by the English after the breed·was introduced to the rest of the world following WWI.· The English did not think naming anything after their former foe was acceptable.· There is no formal breed classification or name differentiating GSDs born in one country·from another.· There are, however, physical differences that are stressed (bred) that are different in the US than other places.

This is the Sandbox, so nothing is really OT here...

As far as the Alsatian name, I've heard that as well, but the breeder that I buy from brings a few puppies over from the Alsace region every 6 months or so, and their papers say "Alsatian" on them. Several of the larger PDs that I work with use Alsatian to differentiate between American-bred and German-bred German Shepherds. Many of the PDs that I work with in Europe also refer to them as Alsatians.

Alsatians don't have the sloped back that American-bred German Shepherds have, and they seem to be better problem-solvers as well. Also, nowadays it's pretty much a foregone conclusion that an American-bred German Shepherd will end up with dysplasic hips, but Alsatian breeding is so tightly-regulated that I have never heard of a case of dysplasia in an Alsatian. I'm sure it happens, but I've never heard about it. Finally, Alsatians generally cost more than American-bred German Shepherds.

Are you a breeder or trainer?
