Hi,
·· I've been looking for some way to get a speech sythesizer for my Stamp (Homework board at the moment, but I'm saving for a BS2 OEM) All I've been able to find is the one here at Parallax, but I'm looking for something a little cheaper.

I think the SpeakJet is the way to go, certainly for the money.·

Funny you should ask - I just built a speech synthesizer yesterday. I built a SPO256 based board yesterday - got the board from www.speechchips.com/shop/

Due to supply and demand, the price of speech synthesizer chips has actually gone up over the past few year. Back in 1983 I paid $12.99 for the SPO256-AL2 at Radio Shack and today that same chip will cost you $21.99. The SpeakJet chip is only $3 more and appears to be a lot more powerful. If I was on a budget I'd get the SpeakJet chip plus the PC Board for $38 total plus another $10 for parts. Or for $55 you can buy the assembled SpeakJet development board+chip for $55 here www.parallax.com/detail.asp?product_id=3007430075

So I won't really be saving by building it myself?

    · Doing it yourself only saves you money when you have a stash of components, if you had most everything but the SpeakJet.··Carrying an "inventory" has its costs, too.
··Sometimes, it's like: "why buy it, when you can make your own for so much more?"· If you're trying to get some prototyping practice, that would be a consideration.

I find that people who want to customize their speech solution like the SpeakJet Super Carrier while people that just want to get right to it like the Tigerbotics SpeakJet development board.· It's always nice to have options.

Regarding the price of the SP0256, in 1983 a gallon of gas was $1.24 and a dozen eggs was 86 cents. Compare that with today's gas prices of $2.45 and egga at $3.50.· Someday we'll be telling our grandchildren about when gasoline was under $10 a gallon...
