PING orientation
Hi there,
I've just started working with the PING))) sensors and I'm digging them so far. I'm going to mount 4 of them onto my robot and I'm just building the mounting brackets for them right now... which brought up a question. Is there any advantage/disadvantage to mounting them vertically rather than horizontally? I remember reading some stuff a couple years back on how the Sharp IR sensors should be mounted vertically for more reliable readings.... now, the ultrasonics are obviously a very different beast, but I'm still curious (plus I've got more room for them mounted vertically).
I'm assuming that the beam width graphs can be assumed to be a 360 degree cone. If that is the case, I don't see a downside to mounting them vertically?
Also, which is the transmit and which is the receiver? I think I'd prefer to have the transmitter lower so it doesn't reflect as easily with the top plate of my robot (where the brackets are going to be attached).
Thanks,
Aaron

So... I mounted them vertically and they haven't caught on fire yet. Still wondering which is the transmit and which is the receive.....???????????????????????
When we tested the Ping))), it was oriented horizontally as if plugged into the front end of a Boe-Bot. That said, I don't believe you'll see a significant -- if any -- performance difference when orienting the Ping))) vertically.

I'm also going to build similiar bot. Could you post your basic stamp code you used to work with 4 ping))) sensors?
