GPS remote readings

I have an idea that seems feasible, but maybe you guys know better.
Would it be practical to feed GPS data into a legal, short range transmitter? The receiver end would feed the data into a PC through a USB connection.I've seen handheld [GMRS?] radios that have a 2 mile range and don't cost much.But..before attaching wires to the stuff,I could use some ideas about interfacing.
I would like to install this on my track drive crawler, which has a several mile range[less the R/C limitations].
Thanks,Jim Richey

No problem doing what you want to do. The data string output by the GPS is very "serial friendly" so you can feed it into a set of RF dataradios. I've used MAXSTREAMS ( documented legal in Canada and US ) and Surelinks ( built to legal standard ) with good success.
Maxstreams come in several varieties and I've tested some Stamp projects at 15 km. The Surelinks ( from Parallax) are easy to work with and I got 1 km without too much trouble.

Tom
That's very encouraging news for me to hear.I'll check out both sources and hopefully learn some new stuff.
