how do I get linear motion from a servo?
Hi, I'm trying to push an object back and forth about 3 inches, and I'd like to use a servo as the motive force. I understand the concept of rack and pinion, but I don't have an idea about how to assemble one in a concrete manner. Is it possible to find or buy some kind of assembly that the servo could be attached to? I'm hopefully looking for something that's somewhat "plug and play".

The following unit will travel 4.5 inches in either direction:

Here are a dozen or more pages of various surplus mechanical parts, gears, chains, etc:

You can get them from hobby shops, and the threaded rods from homedepot.
If you need purely linear motion, you can use some kind of rail system to guide the movement.
