New to the world of Stamps...

Good Morning! I'm new here - you'll probably see alot of me around here. I just purchased my first stamp and programming board this week - hopefully it'll be here soon. I'm not new to programming or electronics or microcontrollers, but I am new to stamps. I've done extensive Visual Basic programming (.net environment) and have taken a handfull of EE classes at Ohio State. I'm getting into this for a hobby -robotics and just making cool gadgets... :) I don't know how active these forums are either - hopefully there a decent amount of activity. I've kept my little personal laser jet printer at home busy printing off nuts and volts archives and some manuals that I don't want to buy. It looks like there is adequate support out here for the basic stamp - that is why I decided to start with it.

    Garrett,
Welcome. And don't be afraid to ask questions. It really gives our ego a boost to help the newbies ;)

Do you have any projects in mind ?

I've got a couple projects in mind - some long term, some short term. With my '05 tax return money (I was still in college through June of '05, and had tuition and such to claim, so I paid no taxes!) I ordered the StampWoks kit. I figured it is the most versatile board (24&40 pin stamps, BS1 and SX capabilites too) and has a lot of useful tools built in it - less to protoype for each project. I'm going to go through most of the excercises and get used to Stamp lingo and programming. I've completed several 6800 based projects in school, so the transistion shouldn't be too hard. I've got a lot of projects in mind - first one will be practical. It'll be a speedometer for my car. The gear inside the transmission that drives the speed sensor stripped. Its plastic - I don't get it either, unless the speed sensor somehow got water in it and froze and the gear gave out. My thought is to tap into the Tach and derive speed from the Tach. The car is a standard, so I can put microswitches on the stick to derive what gear I am in. I should be able to get gear ratio info from Chrysler and then calculate speed from that... :) More math than stamping. I'm thinking I should be able to do this with a BS1 if it is fast enough.. I haven't done nay calculations yet - first I will learn the Stamp - then go to making stuff... Future project ideas include a boe bnot tank with a x/y turret gun (CO2 powered BB) with motion detectors and a ping for distance... Lots of ideas - I'm a big kid really! :-D

    Decent amount of activity?

    Adequate support?

    No...

Insane amount of activity and stellar support would be more like it...

    Staats,
My son's car is currently in the shop for the same type of reason...'92 Tempo with stripped speedo plastic gears in the transmission...unfortunately, these seem to be involved in letting the tranny know when to shift and it is very confused...but only after it gets warm...

I'm glad my car is a standard! :) There is one other thing with the car that I forgot to mention. The actual gauge for the tach doesn't work... I've ben driving without a Tach, speddo or odo for about 2 years almost. :) I haven't got a ticket yet either. I think it would be fun to righ up a system and make a crude speedo based on motor RPM and gear. I can't base it off of wheel RPM's because there isn't a good place to securely mount a sensor for wheel rotation that wouldn't be out of harms way and that snow and ice wouldn't be able to jam up and break...

You guys are probably right about the support and activity - seems like there are a lot of people actively using stamps! :)
