Hello, I don't know much about electronics but I am trying to learn so I apologize ahead of time for my ignorance. Well I joined a project·at school and I am assigned to learn about the Hitachi HM55B Compass.· I am suppose to test it out sometime this week but I'm not sure how to do that?· Can anybody help me with that?· We aren't using a BASIC Stamp microprocessor either but a PIC so I'm not sure what to do.· Any helpful hints on how to program and test it are appreciated...thank you!

Even though our documentation is oriented toward the BASIC Stamp, it fully explains the connection protocol and provides enough information to be used with any microcontroller.· So, yes, you can use it with a PIC -- choose your favorite language and give it a go.

Is it possible for me to test the compass without programming it or connecting it to the microprocessor.... I just need to see if it works or how it works?

The only way to get information from it is through it's synchronous serial interface -- so to test, you'll need a microcontroller.
