Crystal switchout

I am trying to switch out my SX-Key to stand-alone with a crystal. I am trying to visualize the order of things. I have the connection diagram, I just don't know when to program it. I have to take off the power to the SX to intall the crystal - won't I need to reprogram the SX and won't that damage the crystal or SX-Key when I do (I see that the resonator socket on the protoboard is blocked with the SX-Key and I don't want to mess up my chip in this transistion).

Feelin' dippy

Once you program the SX the program stays put until you replace it. You can power-down your ciruit, exchange the SX-Key for the crystal (circuit), and then power back up -- everything should run stand-alone at that point.

The program inside the SX is non-volatile, meaning it stays there even when the power is turned off. Think of the SX-Key and the resonator as an Exclusive OR situation, either the SX-Key is plugged in or the resonator, but not both. Be sure to turn off the power while swapping out them, its not a race, take your time doing it, the programmed SX will retain the program.
