(11) SX Ethernet Stack Kits and (5) SX Modem Kits - for free!

Dear SXers:

As the second part of my message in which we shipped 35 free I2C/UART SX Evaluation Kits, we are now ready to distribute (11) SX Ethernet Stack Kits and (4) SX Modem Kits which we acquired in the SX transition from Ubicom to Parallax.

Before you get too excited about getting one of these kits, I need to tell you that·they are dated. This is true vintage Scenix material.·We view the hardware and software examples as obsolete. In fact, I think that the modem application was tenuous at best and the SX has too limited memory to run a TCP/IP stack. However, I've seen what our SX programming group can do and wouldn't be surprised if you were able to put these kits to use.

We will·distribute these to our SX customers for free.·To do this efficiently·we're going to have to lay down some rules.·Keep in mind I saved·these kits·from the trash. These are the rules:
  1. (1)·SX Ethernet Stack or (1)·SX Modem Kit·per customer (you can't have one of each). I only posted a picture of the Stack kit below.··
  2. Understand the SX before you make the request.
  3. U.S. Airmail only. No tracking, pure open-loop process, no follow-up from Parallax.
  4. U.S. shipping destinations only. I apologize to our valued international customers.··
  5. 100%·non-supported by Ubicom and Parallax. You're one your own with the exception of SX/B and assembly language support.
  6. No re-listing on eBay. Yes, I watch eBay. If we wanted to sell them on eBay we'd do that ourselves.
  7. No whining, please. As the guy with the free stuff I feel this is a fair request.

If you·have no·U.S. shipping destination·and plan on visiting Parallax soon we can hold it for you as a pick-up.·To obtain these from Ubicom, I provided a guarantee·that none of our customers will contact them with any questions whatsoever. Parallax is the only place to obtain SX support. Ask your questions about this kit on this discussion forum (preferably this thread), but don't ask our staff support questions by e-mail as we're not familiar with·these kits and we didn't do the manufacturing and testing of the hardware.

To obtain your kit, send an e-mail with the subject line "SX·Ethernet Stack Kit·Request" or "SX Modem Kit Request" to Jan Mirrione jmirrione@parallax.com. Include your shipping address. Jan will inform me when our supply is exhausted. And because Jan only works the first half of the day, these kits will be gone tomorrow and you will not be informed if you received one until she has a chance to reply.

And enjoy these kits. I can't say I wish I had the time to use one myself, since these two applications were among the most complex designs presented to Ubicom customers in the past. But, I know at least a couple of these kits will find their way into a project.

Sincerely,

Ken Gracey

Requested. Hope I am not too late. I am searching for ethernet kits for microcontrollers. If I didn't get one for free, I will buy one.

    Ken and Jan,

Thanks for the quick response, and for the FRrreebee.· Kit arrived yesterday with my parts order.

One thing to note: These kits are the "iSX/eSX" kits not the "SX Ethernet" kits.

They still use·Ubicom's SX-Stack API, but use PPP/RS232 as the physical layer, not Ethernet. They include example code for an HTTP web server, and a SMTP mail client, that you can access via Windows DialUp-Networking or any other PPP client.

They are great introductions to the SX chips, SX-Stack, and to embedded TCP/IP. Plus, since it uses the same SX-Stack API, any code you create for these boards can be easily ported to the "SX· Ethernet" board if you need the Ethernet physical layer.

    Thanks Again,

    - Andrew -
