Hey SXers:

From your request in November, Parallax·introduced·the SX KeyRing again. You can use this tool with our SX-Key to run your system at 3.3V.

For those who are wondering "what's the use of running the SX at 3.3V", I have a "frankenvideo" module that I'm playing with.

The original video module runs at 50MHz and uses about 80mA @ 5V = 400mWatts.

By tweaking the code I am able to run at 20MHz and use about 40mA @ 5V = 200mWatts.

Now to boldly go where no one has gone before... I see how low the voltage can go and still work properly....

Turns out to be about 2.4V and the current.... a mere 13mA = 31.2mWatts

So the original module uses 400mWatts and a low freq/low voltage module would use only 31.2mWatts! Less than 8% of the power required by the original.

Start looking for those low voltage parts boys...

    Bean.

It turns out that SX's can be lower power than PICs. Nice to see some confirmation of this. The last datasheet I looked at said 32MHz at 2.7 volts so your 20 at 2.5 is well within the spec.

If you just want low power, the TI MSP430 has just about everybody beat. That thing will run on static, I kid you not! Only a few MHz though.

The SX is still the best for speed AND low power at the same time.

The amazing thing is that is the current while actively generating a video signal. Not just blinking an LED or sitting idle.
I am using the Parallax 20MHz leaded resonator with OSCXT2 setting.
Below 2.4 it just stops altogether. I did notice that startup is somewhat iffy at 2.4 but seems fine at 2.5-2.6 volts.

The nice thing ABOUT THIS DEVICE is that you can build a 3.3volt board and reprogram without a dual power supply on the board.
