External voltage regulator on VDD deprecated?

On page 14 of the Javelin Stamp Manual (Version 1.0), figure 2.4 shows an alternative power supply scheme that is not recommended because of a "15 to 20 mA current draw penalty".

Is this something new for the Javelin Stamp? Or does this issue also exist on the Basic Stamps?

I've not yet used the Javelin - I'm just getting set up to try it out - but but I've never used a Basic Stamp without an external voltage regulator. I've always had something on the board that exceded the BS's internal current limits. I'd always considered it pretty much of a wash as to whether to connect the unregulated voltage to VIN or the regulated votage to VDD.

Apparently this is not the case with the Javelin. If it's also not the case with the Basic Stamp 2, I'd like to know.

Also - I've used external voltage regulators that have shutoff pins with the Basic Stamp as a way to create a real software-controlled shutdown. Pushing the "on" button would apply current to the voltage regulator's "ON" pin, and once the Basic Stamp had started up, it would do the same. When the program was complete, it would let the "ON" pin go low, and the entire circuit would shut down, save for minor leakage.

If using an external voltage regulator burns battery so quickly, is there a way of doing the same with the Javelin? A way of having the Javelin Stamp shut off completely?
