Parallax SX Chip Prices to Decrease Between 6 and 40% by February 2006!

Dear SXers:

Over the next few days, Parallax will be updating all of our SX chip prices. We are lowering SX chip prices between 6 and 40%, depending on the package style and quantity price break. The·most significant price reduction is in the SX28AC/DP, followed by the SX48BD, SX20AC/SS and the SX28AC/SS. Considering all package styles·and price breaks, the average price reduction is 20% overall. And, all of the parts will be available in RoHS-compliant packaging at the same price. Finally, we will offer "rail packs" with pricing based on the 100-unit price. Rail quantities vary by package type, but are between 14 and 68 units.

The·price reduction·is a result of Parallax taking over the packaging and testing of the SX line from Ubicom. We are very happy to be able to be able to offer·lower prices with an improvement in the supply situation.

Pending completion of testing, Parallax-labelled SX chips will·start·shipping in·February. Backorders are being filled by date of receipt. At present, you can still purchase Ubicom-labelled SX52s and SX28AC/DPs. All other chips will be Parallax-labelled and tested, along with the SX28AC/DPs when the Ubicom supply is exhausted.

More details on the new pricing is below.

Sincerely,

Ken Gracey

    What does the "-g" mean?

If I were to guess its the RoHS-compliant packaging?

its likely "-g" is "green", ie environmentally friendly (RoHS).

    Paul,

·· That is correct and the -G is shown as RoHS compliant on the following page.

For the DIY group, from what I have been trying to comprehend, the RoHS are a bit higher temperature to make the solder stick and a bit more tricky to solder [maybe different flux and solder required as they were never designed for 'mixed use'] .

Of course, if you are using DIP sockets, it doesn't matter.

    Ken,
What is the reason that the -G parts are only rated 0 to 70 degrees C ?

    Hello Terry,

    I apologize for the delay.

We're conservative with the -G versions at this moment because we've not completed the qualification. However, given that the die is the same (and the RoHS-compliance is just a matter of packaging) we expect the temperature rating to be similar.

Well as they say (who is "they" anyway) better safe than sorry.
I think the old devices were rated 0 - 70 when used at 75MHz.

    Bean.
