4.5 volt motor and Basic Stamp 2 help

I have a Basic Stamp Homework Board, and I've been learning how it works... my interest is with the servos, now I want to use it to control a 4.5 vdc ordinary motor, but somewhere I heard that it can damage the PICs I/O pins... I have very little experience with electronics, my experience is in the programming field. So, if anyone can give me some advice on how this can be done, it will be apreciated.
