What is a fixed 12 volt regulator that can handle five or more amps?

Cheapest method is a hacked computer power supply.

    Easily 30+ amps at 12V.

    LM1084

i used it in a recent application that required 2A continuous. the tech doc states that it can handle 5A w/ 1.5v dropout. but in my 2A app it really cooks so use a large heatsink.

Here's the part numbers for regulators that fit your requirements that digikey spits out:

    5Amp regulators:

    LT1084, LM2587, LM2588, LM2677, LM2678, LM2679

    7.5Amp regulators:

    LT1083

with a 60 watt regulator, you should think about getting a switching regulator (LM25 & LM26 series) since switching regulators generate less heat (and are more efficient) than linear regulators. Though linear regulators in general are easier to use.

PS did you contact the company about constant current diode availibility? Is it possible to pick up single quantities of CCDs?

LM1084 bench test, 10uF tantalum on ouput
    dc supply @ 14v pushing 5.3A
regulator @11.96V pushing 5.2A and smoking my 2ohm resistor. nm that was my antistatic pad.

    Lightfoot,

A typical 12V outdoor lighting transformer provides about 10A. Some are rated higher, but I think they
    start at about 10A.
