BS1 -USB application question........

Hi all,
I bought the BS1-USB for an application idea I have:
I want to use it as an ubiquitous·"soft-shutdown" switch to perform a shutdown of the OS of some small industrial computers that we use in the field. Many·of the systems we have do not have keyboards and we want a way to perform a graceful shutdown of these systems remotely via contact closure.
Basically, my test plan is to put a push button and an enclosure around the BS1-USB and make use of the 'button' command.··By pressing·the button·this would in turn·cause some·ASCII characters to be sent out to trigger the PC to perform a shut-down of the system. My software engineer will take care of that side of things.
My question is:
Can you send out serial data through the USB port, or can it only be used for programming the BS1? I see that the demonstration program uses the debug command to read back data, but how can one access that same data without using the debug command or the parallax programming software?
Thanks for your help,
-Guy
