I just noticed the new 4x20 Serial LCD on the Parallax·home page!· Thanks to the Parallax team once again as this looks like a good product at a great price.· I have been looking forward to an affordable four by twenty, backlit·serial display.

Tim

Edit:
Sorry all, I meant to post the link and missed it.

I see that the info and link to the 4x20 serial LCD has been pulled from the home page today, and that the product description page now lists it as 'ON HOLD'. Parallax, are you at liberty to expound on this a bit, so that we may better understand what that means?

    Thanks,

    Tim

Okay, here's the beans: Even I didn't know that new LCD was in (I live in Dallas, but happen to be in the Rocklin office this week) so after seeing your I went and grabbed one right out of the box -- turns out it had the wrong firmware installed. We're correcting that today and will get them off hold as quickly as possible. I can tell you that with the correct firmware the display works as nicely as its 2x16 counterpart.

    Thanks Chris,

The new beans are cool beans indeed, and such a deal to boot!· The timing is perfect too - I was just putting an order together to place tomorrow morning so I'll include 4x20 LCD's as well.

    Thanks for letting us know,

    Tim

    Hey Chris,

    · I know we've talked about this in the past, but since this is a new product I wanted to ask if you will be offering a bezel to go with the 4x20 LCD...· Any chances?· Something like the 2x16·Seetron product perhaps??

    Feeling Hopeful,

    Tim

Sorry Tim, we don't currently have a bezel.· As for Spence's line, WebDev should have that fixed by tomorrow morning.· Sorry about that!· =)· You can always call Sales for a price quote if ever in doubt.

Sorry to hear that, but please consider the idea as at lease one customer (me) would order one with every LCD. Like I said, look for my order in the morning.

Bezels fall into the easier-said-than-done category -- not easy. Can you point us to an example we could evaluate? In the past we looked into creating a molded bezel but getting a tool cut and the bezel injection molded is very expensive. Our fear is that so few would sell it would but a big red mark on our books that would have to be compensated for elsewhere.

Sure. I like to use the bezels that Scott Edwards·includes with his mounting kits - they are simple, inexpensive and do a good job.· The bezel is nothing more than a clear plastic 'wondow' with a blacked-out border.· On the back side of the blacked-out area is a thin double sided tape.· It works like this:· The kit comes with a template to cut an opening for the LCD to project into from the back, as well as the mounting holes for the corner screws.· Cut the opening, drill the holes, and mount the LCD so that it is flush or slightly recessed from the front face of your panel or enclosure.· The screws do go through from the front, but are counter sunk to end up flush with the front surface as well.· Once mounted, simply peel the backing from the bezel and place it over the LCD and its mounting screws... the blacked-out area covers the cut·LCD opening to trim out·the edges of the viewing area, as well as the heads of the mounting·screws.· I believe the double sided tape is the high performance·3M VHB tape, so it does a good job of sealing out moisture while the bezel protects the LCD.· The end result looks very clean and·professional.· I know that my description leaves alot to be desired here but please take a look at them.· Here is the link to the Seetron ordering page, it's not much for bezel pictures but have a look:

    Regarding bezels.

You can always use an oversized clear plexiglass sheet and some spray paint
    I suggest you make the sheet equal to one side of your project box [the open one of course}

    1. Drill your holes for the mounting while it is still covered with that sticky paper. This includes switches, etc.

    2. ON the INSIDE surface - carefully cut a rectangle the size of the window you want and make sure it is positioned rightly.

3.Remove all the sticky paper EXCEPT that 'window' square.

    4. Spray paint in your choice of black, white or what ever.

    There you have it.

Right, what Scott Edwards is selling is the production and polished version of that same idea.

    On the topic of bezels.....

One alternative to a purchased bezel is to have some cut for you at a sign shop that uses "lamacoid" material. Its the stuff that gives white lettering on a coloured background, for example to make office signs. The machine that cuts the lettering can be set to cut right through, giving a very nice bevelled edge.
At a very progressive shop, you can give them an Autocad drawing because the engraver controller can read the cad drawing directly, although some shops don't realize it. However, the basic sign setup software can do basic rectangles easily.
To see an example, go to the Projects forum and go back to 8/28/05 and have a look at "Wireless Controller". Way down at the bottom is a pic of a small controller I built with a bezel as described. Its mounted with 2-sided tape or silicone seal.

    Cheers

    Tom,

I took a look at your Wireless Controller project and those ideas are great, thank you for sharing them. That method provides a clean and professional final product too, and that is what I'm after. It just seems much to difficult to 'finish' an LCD display easily and that surprises me to some extent. I understand that LCD's vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, but you would think that there would be more than one (or nearly one) 'off the shelf' option to choose from.

It's good to see the 4x20 LCD big and prominent on the Parallax home page again.
