How about an 'Ignore this thread' feature?

I know we can ignore people that we find unreasonable, but some threads seem to just go on and on.

For me, I generally believe that they have mostly jumped their tracks and become a real chore to catch up with.
Nonetheless, it tends to be human nature just to be tempted add a bit more - even when it contributes nothing.

If we had an ignore feature for such, they wouldn't as easily be revivied by witty comments, frustration, and just plain nonsense.

    Kramer,

You have to take into consideration that their is a contest going on.·Just posting,·gives everybody a chance to win. I am pretty sure that after a winner is declared, some threads will disappear rather quickly.

Then again, there is the "Community Supported CNC Milling Machine" with 15 pages of posts and counting. This isn't going to go away or die because of the contest. I also don't think there are that many people trying to up the message count for the contest.

To the problem at hand, I believe that this could be done via the "subscription" mechanisms as follows:

You could supscribe to the forum(s) you are interested in.

When reading a thread you no longer want to see, use the "unsubscribe from this thread" feature.

Read messages via the Control Panel, and your list of subcription messages and you'll only see the stuff you want, or threads from the forum(s) you subscribe to that are new.

I need to retract the above post. If you subscribe to a forum, you can not "unsubscribe" from a specific thread within the forum.

Then just un/subscribe to the thread instead of the forum over in the Control Panel (Edit Subscriptions -- Remove.)· Seems effective from where I'm sitting.

It's currently not possible to 'Ignore' a thread. But if the feature were available, what would it do? If you decide to ignore a thread, would you want the site to essentially mark the thread as read whenever a new post comes to that thread? What about email subscribers? Does ignore mean you don't want ANY communication from posts in the affected thread?

My suggestion for now is that if you've identified a thread you don't wish to read any longer, simply read the remaining messages you are interested within that forum, and then click Mark Forum Read.· This is what I do with non-support threads that are mostly conversation, since I haven't the time for chit-chat.· =)

    Jim;

It's been a bad day at work, and I can't resist:

I'd want it to mean that I wouldn't get any communication unless it turned out to be something I was interested in...

Sorry again, but I just got one of those requests myself.· If you figure out how the system is supposed to know that I am interested in it (without asking me), let me know, I need the solution for a few things here.

John, I'm sorry you're having one of 'those' days. Mine was on Tuesday (knee surgery), but it does get better. You probably don't want to hear this, but it quite possible to accomplish your stated goal, plus or minus a few percent. I have worked with stats people through my career and they have convinced me that it is very possible to predict what you want to read, given enough data points. Things like what you have read in the past, what projects you are working on, maybe even the color of your socks. That's what advertisers pay Nielson for or how Gallup makes it's living. Predicting behaviour.

Of course, it's more difficult to predict irrational behavior. And every office has one. Or two. I have a Mikey Mouse hat that I don occasionally when I encounter that kind of request.

Correct, I want it marked read, no email, no status update if a·new post is added.
    ·
I don't subscribe, just visit the WWW·forum.· With the amount of new threads it’s hard to get though them all, and some I have heard enough after the first post.· Not trying to offend anyone.

I just wanted it to go away - completely not be there.
I supose that I should have a 'black list' that would allow me to selectively reinstate if I change my mind.
