John you had a valid point in requesting the counter to be removed, people will game a system whenever they feel it is in thier advantage to do so, though it has been brought to my attention this thread was started as an indication of the flaw with keeping the counter public.

I'll let you in on a little secret. Yes, the url contains a message number. The system assigns a unique message number to each post. However, posts are deleted for various reasons during the life of this site, so the message number no longer has any correlation to the actual number of posts on the system. The actual number of posts is less than the latest message ID. We just won't say how much less.

hehe I removed the post you responded to, I infered diafysal was trying to game the system, when he indicated that the original post was an attempt to point a flaw. The original post's brevity left me to speculate what his intent was, which was a wrong conclusion. My prior post has also been edited to eliminate the inference. Thanks for the info about the numbering system.
Frankly, I never cared about the whole concept. The right thing was done by removing the counter. I don't think there were any problems since the counter was removed in a timely manner, also, I don’t think anyone is at fault either. All is good in my book.
