PWM and Zero Crossing detection

Hi!
I am in the need of running a DC motor from AC power using a PWM source.
My intentions is to use the PWMPAL to free up resources on my BSII.
I know that I need a zero crossing detection circuit, but can I hook this directly to a trigger input on the PWMPAL, thus making it pulse out only during the crossings? (Wouldn't I want to pulse when NOT at the crossing?)
This is unknown territory for me, so any help is highly appreciated!
FYI: The motor origins from a food processor, if that claryfies the motor in question!?

··· I would forget trying to drive the DC motor directly from the AC and consider getting a Bridge Rectifier in the mix.· This will make things much simpler.
