18V DC as power supply?

Hello,

Is it OK to power the BS2 module on the BOE Rev C with a 12V DC adapter?
The DC adapter has a 12V rating, but apparently it gives an output of 18V when measured with a multimeter.

I would apreciate a reply.

Regards,

Yes, you can power with 12V/18V. The regulator might get a bit warm but it can handle up to 26 Volts so you'll be OK.

Just be sure the Servo Jumper is set to the Vdd position or you'll fry any Servos you hook up to the Servo Ports.

On most boards we recommend no more than 12V on the input.· This is due to the fact that on many of the boards the BASIC Stamp gets its voltage from Vin, not Vdd.· So in these cases 26V would most likely destroy the Stamp Module.· We have one or two boards that can handle the 26V input because the main regulator also feeds the Stamp Module.· Your power supply should work though if its output was around 18V unloaded.· This indicates it's an unregulated power supply.· If, however, you notice the Stamp Module running hot, I would consider a new supply.

A 7812 voltage regulator chip might be cheaper than a new power supply. They are super easy to setup, and are a few bux at radio shack.

BPM's suggestion is valid and probably not a bad idea...Better safe than sorry.· =)· Were the 12V regulated you would be totally safe!· Make sure you have a small heatsink on the regulator though.
