Does anyone still WIREWRAP?

I still use wire wrap because purchasing etched boards, purchasing etch equiptment all cost more than
for me to just go buy some wire wrap wire...

(plus I have an almost limitless supply of DIP wire wrap terminals)

Also I like the fact that I can reuse the wire, the terminals, and the chips.. Nothings permanent, but still better than breadboard.

Anyone have good places to purchase wire wrap stuff?

I am also a "wire wrapper".· I get my stuff at Jameco or Digikey.· One key advantage is that you can always buy the wire at Radio Shack in a pinch!

I use it for experimental projects. At a recent hamfest I bought a box of equipment including three powered winders and a couple of pounds of cut wire in various lengths for $10. The winders are still in the Digikey catalog for about $200 each.

Wirewrap is superior to the plastic prototype boards.

WW Sockets can be had from www.allelectronics.com for fairly cheap and www.sparkfun.com has 100' lengths of wire for under $8.

    BPM,

·· Yes, some of us still wire-wrap...I used to do it for 6502, 6809 and Z80 boards, but now I rarely use it (But once in awhile).· I still keep 3 different colored spools of wire-wrap wire handy in my parts bins, as well as sockets of every popular size for wire-wrapping.

I gave up my wire-wrap tools along with many other items [like a dozen matched 12ax7 tubes in original Textronix boxes] when I moved to Taiwan.

It certainly is one of the neatest ways to prototype. Now I have too solder, etc. Those Power wrappers turn up at flea markets and ham swaps. Definitely an excellent purchase at $10 for three.

I think I will go have a good cry.

I really like wire-wrap wire, I use it extensively, but I don't wire-wrap per se.· Extravagant use of space --·two or three wraps high and I'll have to use a refrigerator for a project box.

It definetly gets messy at times.
