H-Bridge and PWM

When wiring an H-Bridge motor control, do I also need to integrate PWM for maximum efficiency - or is the H-Bridge enough? Has anyone done this for dual-motor control? If so, do you have a schematic?

Do you need variable speed or just on/off? If the latter, PWM isn't nessesary.

Typical newbie that I am - I thought the PWM would aid during in the wheel encoding process. Since I'm new to this, I've been reading that dynamic braking would help the life of my gearmotors. If that is the case, wouldn't PWM help?

Ok I did a lookup on dynamic braking. Dynamic braking and PWM are different beasts and are not interrelated. PWM sets the drive speed by altering the duty cycle of the supply voltage 100%=full speed 0%=stop. Dynamic braking is done by tying the two terminals of the motor together, this turns the motor into a generator and places much more mechanical resistance on the shaft than when free wheeling.

Thanks, Paul. Now I completely understand.
