Newbie - Question for best way to approach

I am wanting to build a leveling system and I was planning on using the BASIC Stamp II for a controller. The project is simple to understand but I don't know where to start. Here is the project goal. Keep in mind that this is just a model experiment.
The objective is to level a 3 foot 2" x 4" piece of wood horizontally on one axis.
I have the motors figured out for each end but what I am stumped on is the sensor to use to determine a zero degree of tilt or slope. I have looked at mecury tilt switches, digital tilt switches and I am just not sure what to use or how to go about processing the data that would be received from the sensor. The motors would respond to bring the highest end of the piece of wood down to being horizontally level with the lowest end.
Any ideas or direction to additional information greatly appreciated.

The two best sensors to use would be an accelerometer capable of tilt measurments or a tilt sensor.
