Caveman question on 'turning a 12V something on' with my HomeWork board.

I just bought the most EXCELLENT “What is a Microcontroller” book and HomeWork Board project platform at Radio Shack about 3 days ago, and I am hooked. I am through most of the exercises in the book and so far everything has worked great, almost as if I knew what I was doing.
Wow, great job, great book, this is what I needed. Admittedly, I am left now wanting more, but that is what I needed.

I am new to programming any kind of microcontroller, although I do some Linux (and other) programming for a living.

I have question that I need some guidance on.

I know I can not directly activate a relay from my HomeWork Project board. My caveman brain thinks that I should be able to use a transistor of some kind to control these 2 12V relays I am playing with (radio shack 275-206).
The relays are controlling a 12V DC motor.
I don’t need speed control, just on/off and direction is controlled by reversing polarity.
Where do I go from here?

For many relays you could substitute a 2n2222 in place of the 2n3904 shown.

Once I learned the key phrase 'Relay Circuit' and searched on Google Images and just Google I found similar info. The article you put the link to was outstanding.

Being a caveman, I still can't make this circuit work. I read up on my basic electronics to make sure I understood the diagram, and it seems really simple enough.

The examples in the “What is a Microcontroller” book using a 2n3904 to switch an led on/off work fine, so I have not cooked anything yet I believe.

Where I am confused is where I physically connect the 2 wires from my 12V source.

Do I use a common ground and then connect the 12v + to the VIN?

Thank you all for your help. Some fantastic posts in this forum, and nobody flamed me for asking a question that seems to be very common. I just did not know what I was asking for.

A great part out there is a BUK205 or other High side driver
