IR distance

In testing distance detection using the freq sweep routines in Robotics with the Boe-Bot,· Page 275· my detectors were able to 'see' out to about 15" which is consistent with the comments in the book.

I wonder how then do TV Remotes 'see' 15 to 20 feet?

TV remote IR LEDs are modulated to the frequency of the demodulator and at higher power -- this makes the system more sensitive. And, it's a direct connection (LED to demodulator) whereas your Boe-Bot system is only getting a portion of the original signal that has been reflected from the detected object. And an object at 15" from the Boe-Bot means an IR path of 30".
