Expanding the BS1 memory?

I've learned a lot by reading the threads regarding interfacing to external EEPROM with the BS2, but how would I do it with the BS1 (i.e. Prop-1)?· Would I need to essentially implement SHIFTIN and SHIFTOUT myself, or perhaps there's another type of external memory better suited to the BS1?
The rest of the story:
My wife bought a Prop-1 controller to use for Halloween, and I've thought of some other projects for it.· I'd like to tap into the speedometer and tachometer pulse trains on my motorcycle for some basic data acquisition, and the update rates and durations I'm interested in require more memory.
