Capacitor C1 exploded...: Newbie

I just attempted to move a BS2 solution running on a Super Carrier board to a remote setting. To power this solution, I decided to use a 12V, 4.5 amp/hour battery and a 12V solar "trickle charger".
(A note on the BS2 super-carrier board indicates that it will handle 6-30 VDC.)
I connected the solar-charger to the battery terminals and then ran leads from the terminals to the male connector on the BS2 carrier board. (I'd verified that the polarity was correct before attaching the connector.)
Shortly after powering-up the board, capacitor C1 (located adjacent to the 9-volt pins and below the male connector) exploded.
I'm a software type--little hardware experience. If someone could explain where I went wrong, I'd appreciate it!
Thanks!
