(OT) way off topic.... seti@home installer

Any seti@home users around? I need a copy of the installer of Classic Seti@home for windows XP. I really don't care to run the new boinc version they have switched to and they have stopped allowing downloads of Classic now.

I don't know how much longer the classic servers will be up and running but I'd like to keep plugging away at work units until they shut it down completely. So if anyone has save a copy of the installer - I sure would like to get a copy....

If you have never seen it run, it's pretty neat. It does fast fourier transforms on radio signals collected by the Arecibo Radio Observatory.

Thanks in advance!

Doc

PS - Yes I have Googled for it already! tongue.gif

I believe the reason you can't find it is that they are going to abandon the classic version and switch over to Boinc completely.

Yes, I realize that. I just want to run it as long as possible before they shut it down. I have over 170K hours of computer time on classic and I'd like to add it to my new Windows XP machine (that I bought soley for the purpuse of using Parallax products on, btw). All my other machines run Mac OS; 9 out of the 11 do anyway - 10 is SCO Openserver (11 is the xp machine). I have completed 14,375+ work units since I have been doing seti@home so I'd like to get a few more in before they abandon the classic version altogether.

    Cheers!

There is a setiathome_win_3_08.exe out on the internet.
But I do not know if it is the right one for you.

What about enlightening those (like me) too lazy to google!
Is Seti@home all about the processing of radio signals from space?

    Yes.

"boinc" however seams to be used by several projects.

Macs and IBM's alike can join in?

    Steve -

Seti@home uses a networked computing approach to process the huge amounts of data. You download a small app that works in the background during idle time and/or as a screensaver. It downloads a chunk of data called a "work unit" and uploads the results before getting another.

The site for classic seti@home with tons of information is here.

This line was easiest to understand:

"You have completed more work units than 99.662% of our users."

Have you considered building a "seti wall" ?

Do you mean with certificates? I've only ever printed out the 10,000 work unit certificate. That seemed like a good hallmark.

    Kinda cool, huh?
(At least to me!) I've always been really facinated with the possibility of finding proof of extraterrestrial intelligence in my lifetime. It would be really cool to be involved in the finding. With SETI, I feel like I get to play a role.

Hmmm... it has never occured to me to have machines running for the sake of Seti alone. All of my machines are running to serve a purpose other than seti wwith seti calculations are performed during idle times. That is an interesting approach though. No boxes, just motherboards on shelves and wired together. I wonder where the wife would let me put that?

I did a bunch of reading on the SETI/boinc stuff...and was very interested...so much so that I installed it on my new MAC.

I really wanted to do the climate prediction one, as I work for the weather service, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of work units from them. So I mostly run SETI.

The graphs are just neat to watch! haha (sparkly lights...ooohhh!)
