My Half-a-Cell-Phone problem

Hello!
I just have a habit of picking potentially useful electronics off the street when I see some. So yesterday I found the second cell phone within 6 months that had had its display ripped off (???) I found that it was a Motorola, but I'm not sure what kind. The base half still works, so if I put in my SIM card I could still use it, but without a display it's·kind of hard to navigate.·Since I·have no prospect whatsoever·of reinstalling the display half, I ripped it (the display half)·apart·to find the following: A piezo speaker smile.gif, a color display with some chips on the back·confused.gif·, the small motor (for the vibrations)·smile.gif·, a smashed second LCD ( the one for the outside, I discarded it)mad.gif· and a small cameraconfused.gif·. Is there any prospect of using the camera and/or the display?

I think someone asked a similar question a while ago....and the consensus was that certain mfgr's use proprietary protocols/wiring for their displays.
So whatyou buy off the shelf in a nicely useable display isn't the same display that's in your cell phone.

As far as the camera....unless it has line level voltages out, I'd find it hard to use for much.

The only real useable parts you've grabbed (motor/speaker)....what about the condenser mic and maybe the battery? The antenna would be a stretch...but who knows!

Yes, I saw that post you mentioned, but I thought whoever it was had a display with NOTHING on it. Mine does have some chips on the back. As for the camera, what do you mean by "line level voltages out"? I was thinking of maybe getting video into my PC somehow(who knows what a camera the size of a pea could be used for!)
I could use the speaker and the motor(probably will), but since the lower half still works, I thought I might use that for DTMF remote control of my robot instead of the giant 7-mile walkie-talkie's currently in testing phase, if I can get it to work (earlier today I reached its Voicemail, but I couldn't get it to call our house phone, for some reason). I think my dad has a similar model, so I'll check the manual. If that works the battery stays where it is.
    Anyway, thanks

What I mean by 'line-level' is basically the right type of signal that you'd plug in to a VIDEO jack on the back of your TV/VCR/etc..
I'm sure this isn't that....as it probably gets save in some digital format to some onboard memory (if not a memory card).

Does it have a plug on the bottom? You might be able to hook it up and intercept the signals that would otherwise go to those 'hands-free' systems.
Otherwise, getting at the dtmf from a spot other than the speaker would be tricky.

The display....I dunno....google the chips and see if they're anything you can tap in to!

Well, I guess I can forget the camera business (with other photo cell phones you get "steaming" video on the screen before you take a picture, though). For extra information, it has 20 leads coming out of it.
For the DTMF stuff, I intend to find the leads that went to the speaker, and tap the mike input, but yes, it does have a plug on the bottom, but I would need to find an adapter since it's also a charging port (might be useful)
Also, might the screen-half have contained any antenna-enhancing components? It doesn't seem to be able to find a network.

If it was dropped or crunched....the antenna portion might've been damaged.
Also, the person that discarded teh phone might've had service shut off...(with the Digital Serial number??).
So at the moment, about the only thing it'd be good for is 911 calls.

I assume, that you'd at least be able to attempt a dial (get dial tone) but it would refuse you right quick.
I wouldn't spend money on it, if it doesn't work....some say time is invaluable....I got more time than money, does that make me rich?

I don't intend to spend any money on it (at most when it works on maybe homebrew DTMF decoder)
No, I used my mum's SIM card, but of course I can't hear a dial tone (speaker absent). I"ll try to connect a speaker somewhere inside, bu that might have to wait till next weekend because it's back to school and that's no joke with the classes I'm taking.
Also I might try to hang a long wire on the antenna portion (could help, who knows)

actually....try and dial a landline (or other phone) and see if you can pick up and talk with the cell....

    just a quick check anyhow!

Nah, doesn't work in both directions. I'll wait a week until my dad comes back then I'll try his SIM card and also calling his cell.
    Anyway thanks
