SX-Key not found on com1...

long story

using the sk key v3.10 i programed an sx28 (never used, fresh out the box) through an oscillator on one of my pcbs and removed the sx key. devices are soldered to the pcb (no sockets). there is a 1uf cap between the sx and sx key port. i made some changes to my program. connected the sx-key to my sx-key port. and received the sx-key not found on com1 message. tried it 3 times or so while powering the ckt before i insert the sx key and after and received the sx-key not found on com1 message. i desoldered the oscillator. inserted the sx-key and received the sx-key not found on com1 message. tried it 3 or so times as before and sx-key not found on com1.

i plug the sx key into my sx tech programming board (no other devices are wired to the sx) and sx-key not found on com1. i notice the led dimming, check the sx28, and it very hot. i try again. sx-key not found on com1 and the sx28 gets very hot. i notice that the sx-key is warm, not hot.

i search the forum for help. i tried Guenther's test for echo via hyperterminal trick and the characters do not echo and the timer on hyperterminal freezes for a few seconds.

is it time to order another sx-key?
if so, what may have caused the problem?

thanks you guys

    Nick.

if you don't get the echo from the SX-Key, there must be something wrong with the cables/conectors between the PC and the Sx-Key. On the SX-Key, the PC's TxD and RxD lines are coupled together in a "tricky" way, i.e. the echo is simply caused by the hardware, and not by the SX20 on the SX-Key. IOW, even when all active components on the SX-Key were "fried", there still should be that echo - if not - check the wires/connectors, and maybe, your COM port (does it work with some other serial device?).

I have no idea why the SX28 on your board is getting that hot - maybe this is a co-incidence of evils hitting you ...

BTW, you should even get that echo, when the SX-Key is not plugged to the SX-Key 4-pin port.

    Mr. Guenther Sir,
you are my savior. it was a simple connection problem that i realized when i tried to program a bs2.

sometimes i cant see the forest for the faulty cable connections.

    thanks again

    Nick,

great to hear that I could help. Some time ago, I had a similar problem, just because one of my standard serial cables was broken - never believe that this can't happen smile.gif .

    Nick,

I am having the same problem. Did your chips stop getting hot? Why would a faulty cable make the chip get hot?

    Jonathan
