I picked up one a while ago and haven't looked back.
The hacker in me wanted to do a homebrew method with a fluffy 2 interface but thankfully the folks here talked me out of it. The SXKey is amazing for such a small device. You won't be dissapointed.

You will not be sorry -- the PDB is our best development platform and will give you so much to work with that you'll be hard-pressed to buy anything else for straight development (other than any other chips you want to connect to, but the PDB gives you lots of room for those).

Have you seen the latest post about the SX Blitz programmer? If not... It can be found here:
http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php?p=550189
Basically it operates much the same as the SX Key but does not offer the debugging features (Help me out Chris & John if I'm wrong about that).
So... If you really need to keep costs down, all you need is an SX tech Board, the SX Blitz and away you go!
However, if you can come up with the extra dough do consider getting an SX Key. The debugger is a thing of beauty and walking or stepping through the code and looking at the registers is really handy when your program doesn't work right the first time.
Cheers,
Andrew

Awsome! You won't be dissapointed. It took me a little while to get up to speed but after reading a bunch of Nuts & Volts columns, reading some of Al Williams text and then Gunther's book it all started to make sense.
Have fun,
Andrew

the second edition is still the most recent one. I'm constantly working on a new edition but so many new things came up in the meantime, like SX/B, SXSim, the PDB, etc. So I simply don't have enough time to get the new edition ready before Parallax runs out of stock with the current print. Therefore, there will be a re-print of the 2nd edition to give me some more time to get the 3rd edition out of the door.
