okay, I just did a little bit of research on the 74HC595, but it sems that you can only control 8 individual LED's with it. is there one that can accept a 16 bit serial input and produce 16 parallel outputs?

    Allegro Micro has a number of LED driver chips which can be used with 8, 16, or 32 LEDs:

    This thread looks like part of another thread.· Let's try to keep everything of the same subject in the same thread please.· The 74HC595 does have only 8 outputs.· But they daisy-chain, and you could connect many to get more outputs from 3 I/O lines.

    ^^^

    Just connect the 0H of first 74HC595 to the Serial input of the 2nd.· You can daisy chain them to create the amount of outputs that you need.
