Maximum Data Cable Length

Dear all,

Kindly point out to me what is the maximum allowable data cable length for each communication type below:
1) RS232
2) USB 2.0
3) RS485

    I came up with:

    50ft. for RS-232

    4000ft. for RS-485

    16.4ft for USB 2.0

    I concur with the "documented" range for rs232....however, I've got a 200ft cable run at the moment on a shielded cable running at 2400 baud and don't seem to have any problems...
    So dropping your baud rate will give you enough head room to stretch the distance out!

    Speed is going to be directly proportional to cable length. Slower bauds will do just fine, but Higher speeds will get swamped with the "capacitance" induced over long cable runs.

    Note, These values assume no active repeating. With Active Repeating, these distances can be much larger.
