controlling serial port DVD using basic stamp

I have seeen the serial port DVD player (Pioneer DVD-V7400) being controlled by the basic stamp in some art installations. I cannot find a reference in how to do it. I had spent a lot of time in my search and if you can point me a place where I can find some information that would be very helpful.
