Should I put a resistor between the MCLR pin of an SX18 and VDD?
I think I remember reading a post by Gunther where it was around 4.7K.
Is that directly between VDD and MCLR, or some kind of pull-down resistor to ground?

I wonder if this wire is hot...

We always put a 10K resistor between the MLCR pin and Vdd.

The absolute value of this pull-up resitor is not that important - it is only important that /MCLR gets pulled up to Vdd with no resistor going to ground - otherwise it would not operate correctly. Maybe, my "favorite" is 4.7 kOhm as I worked a lot with TTL components in earlier days smile.gif . With CMOS, higher values, like 10 kOhm are fine.
