Javelin & Good Eats

This weekend marked the alpha testing of my implementation of the Javelin-based grill controller that appears in chapter 8 of Geek House (http://www.parallax.com/dl/docs/article/GeekHousech8.pdf). What a fun little project this turned out to be. My neighbor supplied the grill, I supplied the Javelin and the pieces-parts and we split the cost of the food. Saturday we had pork ribs and tonight we had a pork shoulder. The controller worked like a charm. The only issue we initially had was having the bread board a little too close to the grill which produced a constant resetting of the Javelin. Once is was moved further away there were no other problems. Well, except that my neighbor forgot to add charcoal in a timely fashion. Nothing the controller could have done about that.

I've attached a few pictures. The bread board has some left over pieces-parts from something else and it's not very pretty, but it proved that it works. I guess my next step is to create a PCB and an enclosure so my neighbor can use this on his own. And the shoebox made a nice little impromptu enclosure to ensure that no food bits or what not made it's way onto the Javelin.

Will the program for the lcd work even if i didnt use a Parallax lcd? i used a hitachi hd44780 lcd...
The code would have to be modified to use the Parallel LCD, but functionally they do the same job so yes, it could be used. Take care.
